Dog Training: Training Commands and How to Use Them - Lesson #2 "Down"

Dog Training: Training Commands and How to Use Them - Lesson #2 "Down"

Down-

Same thing with down, you first start with a clicker and food reward.

Take a treat and put it in your fist, then in a backward like sweeping motion bring the dog down to the ground with the food treat.

Once the dog is all the way down, click your clicker, give the dog the treat, and verbal praise “Good down (insert name of dog)”

The more excited the handler, the better the response from the dog.

Most dogs like to please their owners, so verbal praise and enthusiasm is important.

As your dog’s wind pipe matures and strengthens proceed with the chain collar.

Once your dog has learned the command, reinforce the command with the chain collar.

This establishes pack leadership, and shows your dog who is in charge.

Teach the down command separate from the sit, if you always have your dog sit, then ask them to go down or You will eventually find you lose control of the sit command. You may find Deluxe Little Dog Remote Trainer helpful working with stubborn dogs.

Remember, proper technique with the chain collar and Premium Latigo Leads 1/2 in. x 4 ft. will be very important.

If you perform the correction correctly, you will notice your dog will begin to comply rather quickly.

Once the down command has been learned and reinforced, you can then make your dog lie down and bounce a basketball or tennis ball in front of them.

At first the dog may try and run away or go after the object.

Using a Premium Latigo Lead 1/2 in. x 4 ft. and a chain collar administer a leash correction if your dog fails to remain in the down position.

Be sure to say, “No, down!”

This will take some time and patience; you may need to slowly introduce the objects before bouncing.

Allow your dog to sniff, lick, or play with the object you choose, and then commence to adding the distraction into training.

Be persistent and always control your dog.
