Training Commands: Lesson # 3 - "Wait"
The Basic Commands: and How to Use Them!Training Commands: Lesson # 3 - "Wait" Wait- Make sure you introduce this one as early as possible. If possible start your pup as young as 8 weeks. The best way to teach a young pup to wait is to fill up your No-Tip Stainless Steel Bowls which are great because stainless steel will not breed bacteria, and make the dog wait until he/she can eat. At 8 weeks, don’t expect your puppy to master it, by controlling the food and introducing the wait command it will serve as a useful tool while building alpha pack leader status. Train the “wait” command in both sitting and down position. Again, introduce the chain collar as your dog matures. If your dog does not “wait” after being told, commence with a leash correction and say, “No, Wait” After a few leash corrections, and a few practice sessions your dog will get the idea. One very useful tip is to use food as your distraction on the wait command. Usually trainers will use food during the teaching phase; however, food can also be used as a distraction. What you will want to do is place a treat ext to your dog’s paws. Tell them to wait, and make sure your dog does not eat the treat until you tell them “ok.” A Flat Leather Dog Collar will help you restrain your dog and give the handler better control. As your dog gets more comfortable with the wait command, you must continue to test your dog. You should be able to place a treat on your dogs paw, tell them to wait, leave the room, come back, and only then will it be ok for your dog to eat the treat. Practice, practice, practice!
