Training Commands: Lesson # 5 - "Heel"

PetSmart

The Basic Commands: How to Use Them!

Training Commands: Lesson # 5 - "Heel"

Heel-

Heeling is when your dog walks at your side without pulling or tugging on the Cotton Web Leads.

Make sure you pick a side and always have your dog heel to that side.

Most people prefer to have their dog at their left side.

Depending on the age and maturity of your dog, the type of collar will vary. Always start your dog out on a nylon collar such as "Coastal Nylon Collar for Small Dog Black 3/8""W x 10""L" which work very well in the early stages of leash training.

The best way to get a young pup to heel is to take a dog treat and put it in your hand in a fist, and then proceed to place the back of your fist on the top of your forehead.

This will get your dog used to looking at your eyes rather than your hand; this is a simple and effective technique.

You can also put treats in your mouth; however, I prefer to use the fist method.

Walk with your dog and constantly change directions, saying “good heel” as your dog walks by your side without pulling.

As you change directions, always say “dogs name and heel.”

Praise the dog in a motivated high pitched tone. As your dog heels, continue to reward them with treats and verbal praise.

If your dog is getting distracted, you can slap the side of your hip to regain your dog’s focus.

Once your dog has learned to heel, you may then reinforce it with the chain collar.

Walk with your dog, if they try to pull or walk away from you administer a short and sharp leash correction and say “No, Heel.”

Make sure the leash correction is immediate, as soon as the dog fails to comply instantly correct.

An immediate Comfort Chain Dog Collar correction will tell the dog that what he/she is doing is wrong and will not be tolerated.

Keep your dog on a tight leash, excuse the pun.

Remember you are walking your dog your dog is not walking you!
