Training Commands: Lesson # 6 - "Leave It"

The Basic Commands: How to Use Them!

Training Commands: Lesson # 6 - "Leave It"

Leave it-

The leave it command will teach your dog to drop what he/she has in their mouth.

Whether it is a toy or a piece of food, if you tell your dog to leave it, they must drop whatever it is in their mouth.

On the larger dogs playing tug of war is a great way to learn this command.

Using a Comfort Chain Dog Collar attached to a strong leather lead, play tug with your dog and when you say leave it, administer a leash correction until your dog has dropped what is in their mouth.

As soon as your dog drops what is in their mouth, give instant praise, “Good leave it (insert dogs name.)”

Practice this as often as possible make sure that you are using a good quality tug rope that allows plenty of room between your hand and the dogs mouth. Plush / Rope Dog Tug Toys is better for smaller dog breeds.

If you play tug of war in a controlled environment, you are accomplishing alpha dog status, obedience training, and exercising your dog at the same time.

Any time you toss a tennis ball or other toys to your dog always have them leave it before you throw it again.

These techniques are simple and fun.

Master the leave it command and you will be on your way to a happy well trained dog.

If you would rather a harness, Pro-Stop! No-Tug Harness is my recommendation!
